Chia seeds are probably some of the best friends you can have in terms of nutrition. The small seeds, the Maya already served as a staple food, are translated as “strength“.
And they are really a „superfood“ since they contain five times as much calcium as milk, three times as many antioxidants as blueberries, three times as much iron as spinach, twice as much potassium as bananas, twice as much protein like other seed or grain, contain all eight essential amino acids, have an optimal ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids (namely 3:1) contain the trace element boron, which supports the calcium intake as well as large amounts of magnesium, copper and zinc. BAM!! :-)
And it goes even further: they slow down the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar, so the blood sugar level does not vary too much and energy is released constantly. This also prevents you from cravings. They are also great for digestion because due to their high fiber content they increase the stool volume, prevent constipation and cleanse the colon.
You can simply sprinkle the seeds over your muesli or salad, but also soak them. Within about 10 minutes the seeds will increase their volume up to twelve times and build a gel, which is perfect to keep the water balance of your body, which is especially good when you work out.
This gel can also be used as an egg substitute, for example, in a cake mix, it is a good binder. Furthermore, you can use it in puddings, cereals, pastries, smoothies, …
They are not cheap (a pack of 450g costs about 12-14 EUR), but it lasts quite long, even with daily use, because you only ever use a couple of teaspoons or tablespoons for the recipes and a teaspoon a day is already enough to do something good for your body.
So, you will definitely hear more about chia here on my blog, as I use it almost every day!
I hope I could spread some healthy news for you today :-)
Have a lovely sunday!
Cheers, Steffi
